This past weekend was a ton of fun. I got to spend time with both my girls while the queen made several public appearances (she rarely gets out of the house so I'm calling them a public appearance). I took Molly to the Erwin Park with a friend and his kids that live close by and we went on an "Adventure" together while we walked the trails in the woods. Molly loved it and is begging for more. We all made it to church on Sunday thanks to a minor shift in Lucy's nap times (that's a win!). We ate outside on the porch on Sunday night as a family (Jack included) and enjoyed the great weather... And then...
Later that night a storm blew through with 90 mph winds and hail reported to be the size of baseballs but confirmed in my yard to be the size of golfballs. This is how it happened inside the Kahlig home:
It was a quiet night to begin with while everyone fell ever so sweetly to sleep after a fun day together as a family. Our master bedroom has 3 large windows that, when the neighbors turn on their lights, it lights up our room. The storm started to roll in with an amazing display of lightening which woke us up. Maria and I had a few minutes to look in awe at the weather in our midnight stupor when we heard a few thuds that sounded like hail. We immediately ran to our kids' rooms. I went to Molly's room and by the time I got there, the hail was coming so hard, fast, and loud that I could see Molly in the dark crying out but I could not hear her.
Now, fully awake, we ran to the safe room in the house as I ran to get flashlights and cut off electronics. We told Molly that this was like God throwing snowballs at us, though I'm not sure how comforting that was for her. 15 minutes later the hail stopped and all was quiet again.
We got the TV going at that point to see what just happened and in a few moments a crash came from outside the front of our house. I stepped outside to see what was going on and all of my neighbors were doing the same! They pointed to my house and said it sounded like glass falling off of MY house... "GLASS????" Well, why not? There was a pile of hail ammunition laying at the front door that was about 2-3 inches deep, so broken glass was a very high possibility. I went back to check out my vehicles and they appeared fine (more on that later) and then saw that we had lost 2 windows on our house. One of them was a half broken window to the office and the other was a completely broken window to Lucy's room.
Lucy will need a new place to sleep. We made a couple of calls since the best option would be the play pen that we didn't have with us but it's tough to find a play pen in the middle of the night though our friends REALLY looked hard. We were all asleep within an hour after the storm hit. I had to tape plastic bags over the windows so our house will look a bit odd for a while. Now, Lucy sleeps in Molly's bed and Molly sleeps with Maria and I sleep on the floor. Molly likes to sleep very close to me and I tend to move a bunch in my sleep, so all we do is drive each other nuts.
So the claims adjuster for the house is coming on Saturday and we've had our vehicles looked at. Maria's vehicle sustained a ton of damage that will result in a new hood and windshield (it's cracked). My car is considered totalled. Only body damage, but enough to consider buying a new vehicle according to the insurance folks. Unreal... Here comes the push to get the vehicles back into the garage ASAP. Not a fun time in our house when that happens because it's considered such a low priority for everyone but me.
On a different note, we have a 5 part story that I'm telling Molly that I'm just making up as I go. It's turning out to be really cute. It's a story about how a ladybug lost his spots. He had 5 spots and now only has 1 left. Molly looks forward to this story every night and I really enjoy telling each part. I'm not sure what I'll think of after I figure out what happened to the ladybug's last spot, but hopefully it will be just as engaging and fun.
Sorry about the new house and cars. They are fixable!! I am glad the family is safe and able to live in the undamaged part of your house.
ReplyDeleteYou need to write down the ladybug story. Some day, it can be put into a book with illustrations! Molly would love to have that, I bet.
Take care and love you,
Aunt Joyce
You're right. They are fixable. I just got off the phone this morning with the window guy and we're getting the windows fixed today. The adjusters are coming today, too. A friend of mine came over this morning and said that his roof looked fine from the street but was beat up when he climbed on the roof to look at it. I'm expecting the same here. Lots of work to do, but good times are definitely ahead!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah... And we are looking at getting it down on paper and we'll see if it turns into a book. Would be neat if it did.
